When she loses interest in them, he takes them to her shy older brother, Beverly.

However, this is a cunning trick by Elliot, who, unbeknownst to the girls who know him, switches with his brother.

One day, when an actress named Claire Nivot (Genevieve Bujold) visits the clinic, she becomes the center of a love triangle between two brothers.

The film has classic Cronenberg traits: body horror and violence, imbued with dark psychosexual overtones.

And while the series continues in the same spirit, the story has been slightly modernized.

Episodes of Morbid Resemblance: How Many Are There?

The limited series premiered this Friday, April 21 on Prime Video. All six episodes are now available, running a total of 60 minutes.

What is the story behind the Dead Ringers series?

As mentioned, the series is an adaptation of David Cronenberg's 1988 film which, by extension, is an adaptation of the 1977 novel Twins, written by Bari Wood and Navegante Geasland.

Both source materials were based on real twins, Stewart and Cyril Marcus, who were New York gynecologists.

Although they had successful careers as fertility specialists, their mysterious death in 1975 drew more attention.

While the novel and film were originally about twin doctors, the TV series focuses on twin obstetricians.

This improved story definitely adds more interest and urgency.

This is due to the complex medical issues faced by girls in relation to their reproductive health.

Mission of the Twins

In particular, Doctors Elliot and Beverly Mantle have one main goal in mind, which is revealed in the series synopsis:

Mantle twins who are identical from head to toe are on a mission to change the way girls give birth starting in Manhattan.

The series explores not only their medical activities, but also their complicated personal lives, which, like the original film, are intertwined with drugs and romance.

READ TOO:

Overall, the series offers a dark, twisty and engaging story with its complicated dual protagonists. The official summary reads as follows:

David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller starring Jeremy Irons, a modern take on Uncanny Similarity, stars Rachel Weisz as Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers and an insatiable yearning to do whatever they want.

Including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics to challenge outdated practices and promote women's health care.

Who is in the cast of the series?

Rachel Weisz plays Doctors Elliot and Beverly Mantle. Coincidentally, this isn't Weisz's first time playing twins, as he played identical characters in the movie Constantine.

The rest of the cast includes new characters who are not iterations of previous characters from the original film.

Some of the supporting characters include newcomers Poppy Liu (Hacks) as Fissure, Britne Oldford (The Umbrella Academy) as Genevieve, and Michael Chernus (Severance) as Nuança.

Also returning are Jennifer Ehle (She Said) as Rebecca, Emily Meade (The Deuce) as Susan and Jeremy Shamos (Better Call Saul) as Joseph.

Will there be a second season?

Sadly, it seems unlikely that there will be a second season, as the series is being billed as a limited series.

Therefore, due to the series being a remastered adaptation, it will likely include a definitive storyline that fits into a six-episode season.
